NOVEMBER 2004

Greetings and Feng Shui Blessings To All!

As Republican Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, declared often during the recent Presidential campaign, “We’re Back!”

He, of course, meant something completely different from the substance of this message.  Still, I couldn’t resist.  And who can resist Arnold?

“We’re back!” is my way of reintroducing myself after a twelve-month hiatus.  The declaration does beg the question, “Then, where have you been?”

I answer, “Right here at home in NE Missouri.”

For the past year, Chris and I have been immersed in the myriad details of home ownership.  Mind you, this is a first for us.  We’re used to renting, be it in Hollywood, CA; Barcelona, Spain; San Jose, San Francisco or Capitola, CA; or Norman, Oklahoma.  Settling down, buying a house, until now, never interested us.  But we did it October last and gave ourselves a new set of concerns—certainly not the least among them, determining the best possible Feng Shui!  I must tell you that Chris is no slouch when it comes to balance and harmony.  He understands as well as I do the importance of Feng Shui principles.

Evil Intentions, the fourth Salome Waterhouse Feng Shui Mystery, will be in bookstores in April 2005 and published by Perseverance Press, John and Susan Daniels the publishers.  The brilliant Meredith Phillips, I am proud to say, edited the book.   In this “New World Order” of non-editing editors (current speak.  Be aware of it.  Be very aware.) who do little more than acquire and toss into the marketplace, Meredith radiates like a lighthouse to those who revere and respect the written word.  When my three-book contract with Berkeley Prime Crime concluded upon the publication of Designed To Kill, that publisher declined to expand the series.  Not to worry, Salome and I were overjoyed and certainly blessed by the interest of such a prestigious house as Perseverance Press.  Janet LaPierre, an acclaimed mystery author I have had the privilege to know since before my first book was published, is also published by Perseverance Press, her latest work, Death Duties.  And, I might add, an excellent read!

Before closing, I must mention three extraordinary people who have gone beyond the borders of personal time and assisted me in my ancillary profession as a Feng Shui consultant:  Charles Ferruzza , Carol Jean Barda, and Karen Spengler; this in lieu of an interview with a Feng Shui consultant. But don’t go away!  These people are extraordinary and wherever you may be, who they are will bring light to you.

During our time in San Francisco, Chris and I lived in the Tenderloin, the Mission District, and on Nob Hill.  We met an extraordinarily diverse group of individuals.  But I can say in all honesty, I never met anyone as warm hearted, articulate and erudite as Charles Ferruzza, who is also Kansas City’s premier restaurant critic.  “Anything Goes” is the radio show Charles hosts with Carole Jean Bardo on Fridays at noon on KKFI, 90.1 FM.  Charles and Carole have gone out of their way, like no others, to welcome this author to Kansas City.  Their show, “Anything Goes”, includes Carole’s suggestions of where to go for the best garage sales in this part of the world.  And, believe me, she takes this seriously.  If you follow her suggestions, you will find exactly what you’re looking for and save yourself beaucoup bucks.

Karen Spengler owns I Love A Mystery, the best mystery bookstore in Kansas City.  Recently Karen, who knows the benefits of Feng Shui, put me in touch with Turning Point.   There, I gave a talk to a group of amazing women undergoing cancer treatments.  The energy, the chi, was so high that I was simply blessed to be there.

Sherlock’s Home, a delightful niche of a bookstore in Liberty, Missouri, also provides an extraordinary assortment of strong tales and fine English teas.  Located off the City Center, one feels, especially after looking at the “Doughboy” statue, that Victoriana is extant!  This bookstore is not satisfied with simply being gorgeous, but also is a provisioner of delightful afternoon teas.

I truly hope you continue to correspond with me, all of you and wherever you are. Don’t let the outcome of this election turn you off.  Now that I’m feeling a bit more settled, I’ll be more diligent in responding.  Please continue to let me know what you think as well as your Feng Shui questions.
